English Language Skills Programme

1. PUBLIC SPEAKING AND PRESENTATIONS

This workshop course aims both to train certain specific English language skills required for giving effective presentations and, more generally, to break down any inhibitions which students may have in speaking in front of an audience in English. Attention will be paid to such aspects as structure, terminology, body language and appropriate use of technology.

The 3 all-day workshops will take place on Fridays (and/or on Saturdays, if the course members so wish). A meeting at the beginning of the semester will determine the exact dates. At the end of the semester, each student will give a presentation or informal talk on a subject of their choice. They will also be expected to deal effectively with questions from the audience.

This course requires students to be flexible in their approach to language and, above all, not to be afraid of making mistakes!

All students requiring 2 credit points will be required to give a 15-minute presentation in front of the group on an approved academic topic of their choice. An optional third credit point can be gained by submitting a written post-presentation summary of the student’s own presentation, as well as a report on one of the others from the course. This part of the course will be conducted online.

3. English for Scientific and Technical Purposes

This new course focuses on helping students learn how to communicate effectively using scientific and technical English. During the winter semesters the focus will be placed on scientific writing, while the summer semesters will be focused on scientific oral communication. Regardless of the focus, classroom instruction will also include reading, listening and active discussions related to current scientific and technical topics in order to ensure a well-rounded development of language skills.   Due to the different focuses during the winter and summer semesters, this course may be taken twice and both courses count towards earning the Science Synergies Certificate. The classroom instruction is also enhanced through an e-learning component where students will be able to deepen their scientific communication skills.  Due to this extra workload, this course will be worth 3 ECTS starting in WiSe 2017_18.

Module 4

Programme Overview

This multi-modular course is designed to improve students’ ability to communicate in the sciences.  Various modules will focus on both oral and written communication skills. This is a blended learning programme that will combine e-learning with traditional classroom instruction.

After the successful completion of the programme (4 courses equaling 10 ECTS), students will receive a certificate to attest to their scientific communication skills. Students who completed Technical English courses in the past may have their credits recognized in order to also receive a certificate.

Tutorials
