Projektbeschreibung

In 2011, the Fukushima nuclear disaster took the globe by surprise, again. Nuclear energy companies had been pushing for the increased use of nuclear energy as the clean alternative to fossil fuels. Accidents like the ones in Chernobyl or Three Mile Island belonged to the distant past, the present being safer and greener than ever. Reality, however, has the bad habit of contradicting lobbyists and marketing departments. The Fukushima incident reminded the world that disasters are perpetually imminent when nuclear fission is at play.
Fast forward today, the world is under shock and awe in the middle of a pandemic. The Nuclear Lobby sees an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to revive the nuclear agenda!
“White trouble” is a live electronics installation, in a public space, serving as a constant reminder of the nuclear consequences. A hazed crystal sphere hides a geiger counter, a microcontroller and an RGB light source. Natural occurring radiation triggers the geiger counter up to 30 times per minute (CPM). Each time the geiger counter is triggered, the microcontroller flashes a different colour. The human observer thus sees a couple of differently coloured flashes per minute. The white trouble comes, when the radiation increases: In a nuclear event, the high detection rate of ionization events per minute leads to such a high rate of light flashes, that the alternating colours are perceived as white. If anyone is left to witness the white trouble...
