Projektbeschreibung

With a focus on socialist legacies and post-socialist urban transformations, the project uncovers the socio-spatial histories and lived experiences of the large housing estate “Waldstadt” located in Weimar-Schöndorf. Built shortly before the fall of the wall on the northern fringe of the city, the “Waldstadt” is the least known, documented, and researched of the three large socialist housing estates in Weimar. To extend the collective imagination and knowledge on the “Waldstadt”, the project employs a variety of (mapping) techniques to trace the dynamics of urban change in the late socialist and the post-socialist period.

At the summaery, students will present their findings after one semester of research and reflection on the history and presence of the “Waldstadt” as a post-socialist urban space in Weimar. The presentations will include a visual and narrative history of the Waldstadt's construction, contemporary residents' perception of the “Waldstadt” documented in mental maps, a cartography of physical changes of the built environment traced through renovations, and a proposal for an extension of the Weimar tourist map towards the “Waldstadt”.
