Projektbeschreibung

Urban Art intervention in Brasília, capital of Brazil, a planned city without street names, a political city, the greatest inequality city in the country. How do the empty spaces of this city - especially inside the elitist Superblock areas - guide us to ignore the presence of the other?

//

Brasília, capital of Brazil, is a city planned for cars, not pedestrians. The streets without names, just numbers and letters, seem too correct. As a city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, there are a lot of rules about how to use the space. There are also the “invisible” rules. During my walks in the city I had some questions in my head: “Where are the people? And how do those people express themselves in this space? Why is this space so visually silent? What is not being said there? As a planned city, Lucio Costa (the urbanist) considered or thought about urban art in Brasília? ”.

The intention of this intervention was to instigate the Superblock habitants to observe a different contrast in everyday life, to observe a new strange element, to notice the empty spaces and maybe to think what could be seen in those areas.

I consider a specific conversation as a summary perspective. The porter of building “A” said “when you are walking and crossing paths with someone, it feels like nobody notices your presence”, because everything is so large and open. The banners made him think about how the empty spaces of the city guide us to ignore the presence of the other.
