Art and culture can only be presented and communicated within a context; the local, social, political, and economic conditions of their production and the specific conditions of reception and discourse must be taken into account. A paradigm shift can be observed that has taken place in cultural politics: no longer “culture for everyone”, but the representation of minority scenes and cultures with the goal of enhancing participation. An integral element of this cultural politics is an orientation towards active protagonists and the search for and promotion of new potential. Only few public cultural institutions have understood the importance of this culmination and turned their attention towards these minority (which together form a “multitude”) milieus.
Stéphane Bauer, born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, has been director of Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien since 2002.
