Virtual Reality for User-Centered Train Stations (2018 - 2020)

In this research collaboration with Deutsche Bahn Station & Service we are developing methods for anticipating the user perspective in the early planning phases of a train station. By integrating Virtual Reality based User Studies and Simulation Methods into Building Information Modeling we aim at improving current planning processes.

At around 800 stations, Deutsche Bahn's station buildings offer passengers both the gateway to the city and access to the rail system. They are lively and popular meeting places and are transformed into urban shopping and service centres with a balanced mix of industries.

The project development and construction planning of the complex reception buildings is to be made more transparent and effective for all players through digital planning concepts and systems.

In cooperation between DB Station & Service and the Chair of Computer Science in Architecture (InfAR), scientific foundations and possible application scenarios for digital planning systems are being researched and developed. The research project is supported by the expertise provided by DB Station & Service in the field of digital planning, construction and management of complex station facilities and by the expertise and experience of the InfAR Chair in the field of digital planning systems.

Computer-aided simulation concepts in the field of visibility and accessibility for room configurations are researched in realistic planning scenarios. Furthermore, virtual reality surveys and digital planning instruments for the construction planning and cooperation of the actors of user-friendly railway stations will be tested.
