The Fachkurs Dis/Re/Membering, Memory and Commemoration - From the Streets to Net and into the Body covers two main parts:

  1. „How to Monday Night Lecture – On Art and Commemoration“

In cooperation with Weimars ACC Gallery, the MFA-Program has been presenting the independent lecture series „Monday Night Lectures“ (MNL) for more than ten years. The idea to offer students and the public insight into the thinking and strategies of contemporary theorists, artists, designers, architects, activists or cultural and social workers provides an opportunity to directly discuss relevant topics with invited lecturers outside the university’s structures.

This semester, students will manage and coordinate the MNL themselves. This will involve: selection and choice of guests, calculating and managing the budget, preparing announcements, coordinating technical support and presenting the lecturers.

One main task will be to develop introductory presentations in relation to the theme, work or talk of the invited guest speaker. Presentations can include: performance, video-clip, sound piece, an active discussion or ...

The workshop is intended to provide support for speaking in public and presenting in English as an artist in relation to the semester theme of „Art and Commemoration.

Students will come together into groups of about 4-6 persons. The introductory presentation should be no longer than 15 minutes. Medium is up to the group.

We will be meeting regularly as a group. In addition, every group will meet with either Anki Hannemann or Lisa Glauer individually no later Monday of the week prior to the actual lecture.

  1. “Excavating other Subversions”

Many of us remember the toppling of one of Sadam Hussein’s portrait sculpture in Iraq in 2003.

Traversing constructions of authenticity and how these relate to the modern practice of tourism and performative acts of individual commemoration, we will connect public displays of cultural and collective memory and link these thoughts to what might constitute unspoken – memory and commemoration in the public realm.

Drawing on personal memory and contextualizing this within the arts by examining work by international and local artists, the course aims at developing a framework for reflecting on the artists individual practice while considering the potential for creating collective and individual commemorative work within an increasingly “Global Village” – how do public acts of commemoration change in a virtual age?

Students will prepare presentations on topics such as:

1. #revolution: Internet activism / digital activism / E-activists – cypherpunk, Wikileaks, Openleaks, open source, Hacktivism, Anonymous, censorship

1.1. How to: „occupy“, ResIstanbul!/Occupy Gezi/Taksim, „arab spring“, „arab digital activism“, chinas „jasmin revolution“

1.2. revolution on command or the art of revolution: commercialization, appropriation, propaganda, agitprop

2. bodies moving through public space

3. commemoration, spontaneous ritual

3.1.       countermonument

4.    project spaces, networking

5.    reclaiming your street

6.      Ethics of showing
