Financing

The Studentenwerk and the BAföG-office help with financial problems during the study.

BAföG is a law concerning financial support for education by the government. Half of the support is a loan to be payed back to the government. The amount of the support depends on your own and your parents' financial possibilities. To undertake such loan, fill in the form and return it promptly. The BAföG office will help you in the event of complication. The support is always calculated for one year, after that there must be a new form. Generally, the support lasts just for the regularly time of study. Exceptions are disease, pregnancy or engagement in the Student Council.

Aside from BAföG financial aid for students, one can can also obtain a Bildungskredit. The credit is a method offered by banks with the aim to support students in more individual and flexible ways.

Worst case scenario: Dept. To help to get out of financial emergency, the Studentenwerk offers in such a situation an interest-free credit for 12 months maximum.

There are plenty of scholarships and loans. You just have to find the right one for you.

Insurance

The International Office and the Student Service provide advice on insurance. First of all, you need a health insurance before you register. By enrolling at the University, you get statutory accident insurance, private accident insurance and limited liability insurance without paying extra fees.

In case of an accident related to your studies in time or place (including library, excursion, university sports, journeys to and from school) you have to infrom your dotor that the accident took place in university. Do not forget to motify the staff of INFOtake (next to the cafeteria in Marienstr.. 15b).

Also think about a "Haftpflichtversicherung" (third party insurance), which is useful in case you want to borrow equipment from the university. Possibly, you want to insure your property against theft. E.g., even in the case of housebreaking your computer is not insured when stolen from the university.

Emergency numbers / Notfall-Nummern

The emergency numbers in Germany are 110 (Police) and 112 (Fire Brigade & Ambulance). You can dial free of charge from any public call box. Through the 112 number, you can call for an ambulance (Krankenwagen).
