Arbeitsprojekt
Schiller goes Public Art in Jena

(18 SWS/20 ECTS-CP)

Studio Project
Schiller goes Public Art in Jena

(18 SWS/20 ECTS-CP)

On the occasion of the Schiller year 2005 and in cooperation with the Jenaer Kunstverein, a project will be realised in collaboration with postgradual students of the MFA programme from all over the world: Public Art and New Artistic Strategies.

Starting from Schiller’s stay in Jena, lasting one decade from 1789 to 1799, the city of Jena will be investigated. The artists will be confronted with questions of Schiller’s aesthetic during guided tours of the city, through insight into Schiller’s literary work as well as in the graduate seminar, Artistic works will be conceived for contemporary public space which are temporary, which involve Jena’s citizens and which seek new forms of artistic expression in reference to traces found and their associations. How can one read, see, think, treat, interpret, meet, respond and visually discuss Schiller today? Which new artistic strategies can be thought out after the interpretation of Schiller’s (wealth of) ideas?

Is it possible at all to develop a temporary artistic work with the complexity of Schiller’s thinking as a background?

Postgraduate students from all over the world will face these questions under the direction of the project’s teachers.

An exhibition in the Jenaer Kunstverein will accompany the works in urban space. The conceptual centre, the space of the Kunstverein, leads to the different places where artistic interventions can be found.

The exhibition in the rooms of the Jenaer Kunstverein will be opened in June 2005. The exhibition project shall show new artistic positions regarding an historical subject and shall enable an understanding of new aspects of Schiller’s work and personality.

Graduate Seminar
Friedrich Schiller’s Aesthetical
perception. Now and than.

(2 SWS/7 ECTS-CP)

(Theoretical seminar with tutorial in preparation of the exhibition in the »Kunstverein Jena«)

In his letters on the aesthetical education of mankind from 1795, Friedrich Schiller defines the aesthetical perception as a source of freedom of mind as of political consciousness. Herein he focuses on the tope of beauty, the classical tope of the aesthetics, and on that of play. This combination sets his theory out to be modern before its times. Beauty, before Schiller being the domain of a purity freed from the world, in Schiller’s writings becomes detectable as a content within it. More than that beauty in Schiller’s writings becomes a necessary aspect of man’s sensibility.

Taking Schiller’s letters as a basis, the seminar wants to pull his notion of aesthetical education into its conditions at present. Asking what the status of beauty, of political consciousness is structured by today, we will focus on the social space where it is enacted: the public sphere. Taking up examples from Schiller’s own times and contrasting them with the ideals on aesthetical education taught at the Weimar Bauhaus in the 1920s, we want to transfer the question: How can aesthetical education be enacted in artistic production?

As the seminar will be taking place in form of two weekends and two additional tutorial meetings we ask all students to enrol via email before the beginning of the summer term. We will then be able to provide everyone with a detailed seminar plan.
