As an international cooperation project with 13 other contributing institutions, »Large Area Fluidic Windows - LAWIN« has received a total of almost six million Euros in funding for three years from the European Union (EU).
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jörg Hildebrand explains: »The increased use of multifunctional glass in building facades has permeated the field of architecture in recent years. One of the main goals of the LaWin project is to reduce the amount of energy buildings require. By efficiently utilizing the solar energy that enters through the facade of a building, one can reduce the amount of energy required to heat in the winter and cool in the summer.«
The main objective of LaWin is to develop a glass-glass heat exchanger that is only four to six millimeters thick, in order to integrate this as a central plate into new or existing glazing or window concepts. Such adaptive energy-saving facade concepts are capable of allowing large amounts of light to enter a building despite the inserted liquid, while reducing the building’s energy requirements. The developments from project LaWin will offer a high quality and environmentally friendly alternative for energy-optimized building construction in the future.
LaWin is under the scientific direction of Prof. Lothar Wondraczek from the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and is part of the »Energy Efficient Buildings« project from the EU funding program »Horizon 2020«. The European Commission believes that LaWin will help them realize their objectives for Europe 2020 regarding climate change and the implementation of sustainable energy. This is the eighth Research Framework Programme launched by the EU with the aim of building a Europe-wide knowledge and innovation-based society and a competitive economy while simultaneously contributing to more sustainable development.
