Wielanplatz, Marienstraße 1
At the south end of the historic city centre (or more exactly, the Frauenplan), one can find a statue on the square honouring Weimar’s famous writer and ducal tutor Christoph Martin Wieland. From here students can head into town via Schützengasse or Frauenplan, or walk to the southern-most campus buildings via Marienstrasse or Amalienstrasse.
In 1999 the most important departments in the Faculty of Art and Design were relocated to Marienstrasse 1. At the turn of the 20th century, the court photographer Louis Held had his studio here. Later it was to become Weimar’s first cinema.
