    Goal of Studies

The goal of the Media Culture bachelor's programme is the acquisition of scientific capabilities in dealing with media and culture, their structures, and their products. This scientific knowledge especially includes the analytical, critical, historical, theoretical, organisational, and practical skills necessary for working in concept-oriented and knowledge-oriented occupations in the media industries and in cultural areas. Reasonable proficiency in using media is essential. Independent, cooperative, responsible, and innovative work is especially fostered.

    Occupational Fields

Professions requiring analytical and creative skills in the fields of education and knowledge transfer, art and cultural production and administration, research and development, editorial positions, public relations, and consulting.

    Structure of Studies

The standard duration of study for the bachelor's programme is six semesters. The degree programme is divided into two phases: the introductory study period and the advanced study period. The introductory study period comprises the first two semesters and concludes with the intermediate examination. The advanced study period then follows. After completing and presenting the Bachelor’s thesis in the sixth semester, the Faculty of Media awards the academic degree of Bachelor of Arts as a first professional degree. The degree programme is oriented towards a project-based form of studies. In this format, project modules (consisting of plenary sessions, seminars, and lectures) in the fields of media science, cultural science, and the media economy are offered each semester, in addition to a practical training module from the degree course in Media Art and Design. Other forms of learning include the study module (consisting of lecture and seminar, or two seminars), colloquia, internships, laboratory courses, and special courses.

European Media Culture – Bachelor of Arts (B. A.) and Licence Information-Communication

    Goal of Studies

The goal of the Media Culture bachelor's programme is the acquisition of scientific capabilities in dealing with media and culture, their structures and their products. Such scientific knowledge includes the analytical, critical, historical, theoretical, organisational and practical skills necessary for working in concept-oriented and knowledge-oriented occupations in the media industries and in cultural areas. Reasonable proficiency in using media is essential. Independent, cooperative, responsible, and innovative work is especially fostered. Modern culture, whether technical, political or economic, can no longer be viewed within the confines of national borders. Not only data and information circulate around the globe, popular and trivial culture in its many forms does too. As a result, future graduates will need to acquire extensive inter-cultural competencies. The French-German European Media Culture programme of study was founded in response to this demand, and is offered as joint programme by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Université Lumière in Lyon. This programme offers students the opportunity to earn parallel degrees from both universities without having to extend the length of their studies, a Bachelor of Arts from the Faculty of Media in Weimar and the Licence en Information-Communication from the Université Lumière Lyon 2.

    Structure of Studies

The standard duration of studies for the joint programme is six semesters. To acquire both academic degrees, successful participation in the coursework specified for the programme of studies and completion of the exams according to the respective examination regulations are required. Half of the period of studies is spent at each of the participating universities. Students complete the first year of studies at their "home" university, where they acquire the necessary foundations of knowledge. In the second year, they transfer to the respective partner institution. At the end of the fourth semester, all students complete the deug exam (Diplôme d‘études universitaires générales) in Information-Communication. All students spend the fifth semester in Lyon, the sixth in Weimar. At the end of this third year of study, students are awarded the Bachelor of Arts from the Faculty of Media at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and the Licence Information-Communication from the Université Lumière Lyon 2.

Application submissions should be made online by the 15th July of each year: Online Application Form.  Applicants should fill out both the application for the Media Culture bachelor's programme, and the additional “Zusatzantrag” for the European Media Culture programme. All applicants will receive notification of successful or unsuccessful admission from the middle of August onwards. Successful applicants can then enrol online with the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar (enrolment deadline: 30th September of each year). For further information, please contact the Counselling Officer Annette de Jong: annette.de.jong(at)uni-weimar.de.

The qualifying exam consists of three elements: selected grades from the secondary school leaving certificate (French, German, History) excellent French language skills, and intercultural and media skills. This information will be ascertained in an interview of maximum 30 minutes at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Interviews take place in late July / early August.

    Basic Framework

While at the respective partner university, participating students hold the status of regular students. Throughout the programme of study, advising and assistance for participating students is provided by the partner university. Students who qualify for financial aid may fund their studies through the German Bafög financial aid program. Additionally, it is possible to apply for a stipend through the Deutsch-Französische Hochschule (DFH).
