Media Art and Design at the Faculty of Media is understood as a cultural and artistic practice. It identifies decisive instances of communication in the media. The tasks of media design are related to broad areas of day-to-day culture, taking into special consideration the fact that data and information, along with high cultural, pop cultural, and trivial cultural forms and contents, circulate around the world.
In this way, the dissemination and processing of information is as much a topic of media design as the creation and implementation of fictions, and the development of new public realms, communicative spaces and interpersonal frameworks. The approaches of media design are of an artistic, technical, and organizational nature. Media design at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar derives its special profile from the connection of auditory, visual, event-based, and conceptual issues, in order to gain both artistic and scientific insights.
The focus of media design is artistic-creative training in the fields of fashion and public appearances, multimedial narration, media events, interface design, design of medial environments, experimental radio, electroacoustic composition, and sound design. These fields are supplemented by scientific and technical coursework from the areas of Media Culture, Media Management and Computer Science and Media.
Since 2005, the Faculty of Media offers students the possibility of acquiring a dual qualification as part of the Media Art and Design master's programme. The joint programme of study “Integrated International Media Art and Design Studies (IIMDS)” is offered in cooperation with the Tongji University in Shanghai. Successful students are awarded a “Master of Fine Arts” (MFA) from the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and a “Master of Arts” (Communication) from the Tongji University Shanghai. Since 2010 we offer the English-Language master's programme of study "Media Art and Design".
