Health Insurance
In order to matriculate at a German university, each student must take out a health insurance policy. If you already have such a policy in your home country, it can be recognised here.
If you are a European Union citizen, you are also covered by state health insurance in your home country for a stay of up to 12 months in Germany. In order for this to be validated, you will need the European Health Insurance Card - EHIC), which your home insurance company will issue and which is recognised in Weimar by the AOK (Allgemeine Ortskrankenkassen).
All other students must take out a special health insurance policy, which can be taken out either in your home country or immediately after your arrival in Weimar. Please be sure to find out exactly what is covered by your home health insurance policy, bearing in mind that private insurers will expect you to pay for any health costs incurred before they reimburse you at a later date.
For this reason, we recommend that you avail yourself of a state health insurance policy, e.g. with the AOK in Weimar. The monthly contribution currently stands at €50.00. The Welcome Session will cover all the information and advice you will need regarding this matter.
