Financing your trip

The costs of studying abroad are generally higher than studying in Weimar. Such expenses could include:

  • Tuition fees (not applicable to student exchange programmes)
  • Travel expenses to and from the foreign university
  • Language courses
  • Accommodation (usually more expensive than in Germany, and especially more so than in Weimar)
  • Additional costs for health insurance and preventative measures (e.g. vaccinations)
  • Higher cost of living
  • Semester contribution and fees

Please note that in some countries, foreign students are required to provide proof of financial resources for the duration of their studies. This proof must be submitted together with the student visa application (e.g. the J-1 student exchange visa for the USA) or directly to the responsible immigration authority.

The most important forms of funding for study visits abroad

1. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar supports students who wish to participate in student foreign exchange programmes for one or two semesters.

For those who take part in the ERASMUS programme, the university waives the tuition fees and grants the ERASMUS Mobility Allowance to students who qualify.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar has also made student exchange agreements with the partner universities in non-EU countries which offer their students tuition fee waivers and additional support, such as free accommodation and financial aid packages.

More information about funding measures is provided in the foreign exchange programme descriptions.

2. Foreign BAföG

3. Study loans

4. The DAAD scholarship database and the Foundation Index can offer you an overview of the subject- and country-specific funding opportunities available. For more about funding for visits in the USA, visit the Fulbright Commission.
Please don't overestimate your chances of receiving a scholarship for your study visit abroad. And keep in mind that the application, review and selection procedures may take up to 12 months! For many scholarships, recommendations or assessments from your professors and/or confirmation from the programme supervisors at the foreign university are required, which you will have to obtain well in advance.
When planning your study visit abroad, you should remember that not every student who applies is accepted. In some cases, there are simply too many applicants, or there's not enough funding to go around, or the candidate's qualifications are not deemed sufficient.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the largest scholarship provider in Germany. You can apply for a DAAD scholarship programme by using their online application form available on the DAAD website.
