Going abroad as a free mover

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar cannot satisfy every student's wish to participate in a foreign exchange programme at a university abroad. However, you can also study abroad as a 'free mover', but this means taking the initiative and starting the application process as soon as possible. The International Office can offer you limited support in preparation for your visit abroad as a free mover, because you yourself are responsible for taking each step in the process – contacting the foreign university, gathering information about courses and requirements, and eventually enrolling as an international student.

You should begin researching and preparing for your study visit at least 15 months before you intend to begin the study visit. You may find that the DAAD data base can help you take that first step of choosing a foreign university which best fits your wishes and circumstances. The DAAD also offers a large bookmark collection of helpful Internet addresses categorised by continent and country. For a list of university- and research-related links worldwide, visit AdmiNet. We also provide our own collection of links, listed by subject.

Application:

When you contact the foreign university for the first time, be sure to tell them that you only wish to study there temporarily as a non-degree-seeking student, as this will simplify the application and admission process. The tuition fees are also usually higher for those who are pursuing a degree.

Do not underestimate the challenge of financing a period of study abroad as a free mover. Bear in mind that most scholarship applications must be submitted quite early (12 months or more) before study abroad commences.
