Accommodation
Finding suitable accommodation is an important step in preparing for your foreign study visit. After all, the success of your foreign exchange experience largely depends on where you live. And your choice of accommodation strongly depends on your personal wishes and financial means.
Keep in mind:
- If your information packet, which you received from your host university, includes an application/registration form for student accommodation, you can presume that the university will either allocate accommodation for you or help you find a place to live. Such assistance is sometimes mandated in the contract which the partner university is obliged to honour. However, the majority of agreements only mention that the partner university has moral obligation to offer foreign students assistance with finding accommodation.
- Contact your host university in advance to avoid any unpleasant surprises. The International Office at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is generally unable to provide detailed information regarding how and by which means you can find suitable accommodation in your university town abroad.
- Take advantage of the knowledge and experience of other students who have already studied at the partner university.
The early nomination for a foreign exchange programme allows you to contact students from Weimar who are currently studying at the foreign university of your choice. They can help answer your questions about finding accommodation and, in some cases, may agree to leave their flat to you. You can obtain the e-mail addresses of your fellow Bauhaus students at the International Office, as long as they've given their permission in advance.
The TANDEM Programme at the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar goes beyond allocating rooms to foreign students. The programme arranges for Bauhaus students and students from partner universities to team up in their respective countries and help each other tackle the problems they encounter in their studies, with the language, accommodation and daily life.
Conversely, the International Office expects that once you've begun your period of study abroad, you will allow us to share your contact data with fellow students from our university. You can agree or refuse to share your contact data on the "Statement of Acceptance" form.
Flat Exchange
The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar makes every effort to find suitable accommodation in Weimar for its foreign students. You can offer your room in a flat-share or single flat to a visiting exchange student while you are away on foreign exchange. Fill the online form with your offer and if you have specific questions, contact Ms. Evelyn Beyer at the International Office (Coudraystr. 13 A, Rm. 113, Tel. 0 3643 58 23 62). We have also informed our partner universities of the possibility of flat exchange. Not only can this save you money and trouble, but it encourages foreigners to return the favour, as they too will face the same problem.
