Guide to Going Abroad

The bilingual brochure Guide to Going Abroad answers the most pressing questions of those of you who plan to study or do an internship abroad.

The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar offers many opportunities to students who wish to study or complete an internship abroad. We would be very happy to help you!

Studying abroad offers you a unique chance to expand your horizons. Aside from the academic benefits, study abroad can give you an inside view of the life and culture of another country, and improve your foreign language skills to an extent that is rarely possible any other way.

As you plan and prepare for your study trip abroad, you should ask yourself the following questions:

  • When should I go abroad and for how long?
  •  How will studying abroad affect my studies? (recognition of academic credit)?
  • Do I have to improve my foreign language skills ahead of time?
  • Where should I study and how do I get accepted by the foreign university?
  • ow can I finance my visit abroad?

One option is to participate in a foreign exchange programme. There are several advantages to such programmes:

  • You can apply for admission to a student exchange programme offered through the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and its partner universities around the world. The Bauhaus-Universität Weimar is responsible for selecting and nominating participants for the programme. Candidates generally do not have to apply for regular admission at the foreign university.
  • As per prior agreement between the partner universities, all academic credit obtained abroad is recognised by the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.
  • Financial aid is provided, e.g. waiver of tuition fees, mobility allowances, free student accommodation at the foreign university. Binding statements regarding financial aid are included in the notification of acceptance.
  • Support services are provided the foreign university, e.g. providing accommodation and free or inexpensive language courses.

Another option is to study for a semester or two abroad as a 'free mover' . In this case, students have to apply to the foreign university on their own (normal admissions process) and are responsible for financing most of the expenses themselves
