Removal from the register

While matriculation marks the beginning of your university studies, removal from the register formally marks the end. This administrative act has a number of legal and financial consequences which students may not be aware of.

Paragraph 69 of the Thuringian University Code effective December 21, 2006 lists the conditions that warrant removal from the register. The particulars of the process are outlined in Par. 14 of the Matriculation Ordinance of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar.

A student can be removed from the register for any of the following reasons:

1. The student has successfully completed the final examination in his/her major and has consequently finished his/her studies (Par. 14, Sect. 1 of the Matriculation Ordinance).

Removal from the register always occurs at the end of the semester (either Sept. 30 for the summer semester or March 31 for the winter semester), regardless of when your final examination was completed. Your final grade is entered into the databank as soon as the Student Office receives your final certificate – which is important for partial waivers of BAföG repayment and your pension statement. The university is legally obliged to notify your health insurance provider of your non-student status beginning on the day of your removal from the register.

Of course, students are allowed to specify the date of their removal from the register, which they can enter in the Removal from the Registry application. However, it is not allowed to backdate the removal of one’s name from the register! If you wish to be removed from the register before the end of the semester, you must return your student ID (and thoska card, if you happen to have one) to the Student Office. In return, you will receive a certificate confirming your removal from the register (which you have to provide when applying for a new course of study or enrolment at another university) and your pension statement.

2. The student has submitted an application to be removed from the register (for personal reasons, for example).

3. The student fails to re-register in due form, e.g., failing to pay the tuition and administration fees or the long-term study fees in total, or within the payment period (Par. 14, Sect. 3, Nos. 2, 4, 5 of the Matriculation Ordinance). The result is an automatic removal from the register!

4. The student was unable to pass the preliminary, intermediate or final examination after repeated attempts or was ultimately unable to fulfil the conditions required to take these examinations (as outlined in Par. 14, Sect. 3, No. 10 of the Matriculation Ordinance).

Please read the Matriculation Ordinance for other reasons for having one’s name removed from the register.
